What is Cannabigerol?

Posted by on

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a term you’ve probably never heard before unless you’ve been studying about the cannabinoids found in cannabis. However, by now, you’ve probably heard about cannabidiol—more commonly known as CBD. It’s a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp. But cannabigerol (CBG) is often overlooked. And it’s a shame. CBG is a cannabinoid that has incredible potential for promoting a state of well-being in your body.

Like all of hemp’s alkaloids, they attach to the receptors of your endocannabinoid system (ECS) to form a biological equilibrium within your anatomy. Each cannabinoid plays different roles in your ECS. So it’s important to understand the physiological effects of them all. They’re all extremely important. But, for now, we’ll focus on cannabigerol alone.

The reason cannabigerol (CBG) is so important is that it’s the mother of all cannabinoids. Whenever cannabigerol is in its purest form—cannabigerolic acid (CBGA)—it is the molecule that other cannabinoids are synthesized from. So it’s the predecessor of three different family lines of cannabinoids: THCA, CBDA, and CBCA. And all three of those lines become some of the biggest names of active cannabinoids studied: THC, CBD, and CBC.

The Benefits of Cannabigerol / CBG

It wasn’t until recently that our government took hemp off of the DEA’s Schedule I list of drugs. So the research about cannabinoids and their potential is limited. However, new studies are being performed at a growing pace.

Cannabigerol is one of the cannabinoids that has recently gotten a lot of attention. And it’s a prime candidate for scientific research, too. So far, the evidence points in the direction it has a lot of prospects for what the alkaloid assists the ECS to accomplish. In the near future, you should expect to hear more up-to-date research pinpointing newly discovered reports from scientists. In the meantime, we’ll touch upon a few of the areas that scientific results have suggested cannabigerol plays a large role in.

Cannabigerol is Anti-Inflammatory

Inflammation is a growing concern in the world. Certain inflammatory complications are known to set in as we age. If we look at arthritis and joint diseases alone, we find it affects close to 350 million people on a global scale. Just in America, 43 million people are diagnosed with it. That’s approximately 20% of the adult population. So it’s something scientists are taking seriously.

And that’s why CBG is getting more attention. Scientists have had great success with their findings of the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabigerol through in vitro studies. When we look at one of those experiments, we see that CBG might potentially help fight against neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. And that’s important because inflammation and oxidative stress can lead to the death of a cell’s neuron. And we all want our cells to remain healthy.

Cannabigerol Treats Pain

If there’s anything inevitable in life (other than death and taxes), it’s the fact that all humans undergo some form of pain regularly throughout their lives. The older we get, the more pain is introduced into our reality. It’s just one of the facts of life that Mother Nature is prepared to teach us. So humans have always looked for ways to mediate those pains throughout history. And cannabis provided a particular alkaloid to do this: THC. And science has proven that cannabinoid to be more than capable of producing those desired effects.

However, scientists are now looking at another alkaloid inside the cannabis plant for a possible remedy to the pain we find ourselves being dealt with. In one study, it shows cannabigerol displays more promise as a potent analgesic in our bodies than even the THC cannabinoid. If more research proves this to be the case, it can be a game-changer for science and open the doors to more beneficial medical applications from the plant.

Cannabigerol is Antibacterial

Right now, in the news, the media have been covering the outbreak of the coronavirus on every global news channel. Humans are constantly battling nature for our survival. Whether we’re combating viruses or bacterial superbugs, we’re always trying to utilize scientific breakthroughs to help cement our domination on the planet and maintain a healthy existence.

That’s why recent studies of cannabigerol are so important. In one recent study, the experiment showed that cannabigerol could fight MRSA infections in mice as effectively as other drugs on the market—like vancomycin (a drug considered by some as the last line of defense against drug-resistant microbes). And if further evidence proves the results to be conclusive, this could help us stave off some bacteria that have become more aggressive with their evolution in the past decades, as antibiotics have become less effective.
