CBD for Dogs

Posted by on

There’s no denying CBD has taken the health and wellness industry by storm. Promotional advertorials are everywhere: social media, paid ads, articles, and even television shows host educational broadcasts on the subject. But did you know CBD is also available for your pets? That’s right. Products are available for your fur-family, too. So if you have a dog, then utilizing the benefits of CBD for dogs will be something you would want to hear more about.

Pets Have an ECS System

Pets have an ECS system just like humans do. In fact, all mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). And that’s important because the ECS is how cannabinoids, such as CBD, interact with our biological functions. Just like you, your pet creates molecules called endocannabinoids that bind and activate their cannabinoid receptors that belong to their ECS.

To put the scientific explanation in layman’s terms, these endocannabinoids are naturally produced by the cells in your pet’s body. They help to regulate different biological components that are needed for healthy biologic homeostasis: anxiety, metabolism, memory, sleep, etc.

But the cannabinoids found in hemp can also trigger the same receptors that your endocannabinoids do. That means those alkaloids can promote the same sense of well-being in your pet’s body as do the molecules their cells create. But some of those cannabinoids in hemp have also scientifically been proven to assist with treating certain illnesses we face, so science is looking to see how they might benefit our pets, too. Recently, researchers have been delving into the subject of CBD for dogs.

CBD is known to Treat Epilepsy

Since we know CBD is known to treat epilepsy—the FDA recently approved a CBD-derived pharmaceutical for two forms of epilepsy, then a logical argument would be it has the same effects on dogs that suffer from the illness. However, there was no research or scientific evidence to support such a claim. So the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Health Foundation (CHF) decided to step in and sponsor a study back in 2017 that looked out for our canine counterparts.

And it made sense to perform the study. The most common canine neurologic condition is idiopathic epilepsy. It’s known to affect close to 6% of the global population of pet dogs. And there’s no known cause for the illness, either. So a dog can be affected from the condition without any prior warnings. It’s a terrible experience to witness. Whenever your pooch is suffering from such a horrible affliction, you want to be able to do everything in your power to remedy the situation. So if you could find out that CBD for dogs was able to help them, you would want to know, right?

Well, you’re in luck. The study has been finished, and the results are very promising. And the conclusion the scientists discovered is CBD did assist with the reduction of seizures in the dogs that participated in the study.

CBD for Dogs Reduced Seizures in Study

According to the research, led by Dr. Stephanie McGrath, a neurologist at James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University, out of all the dogs that received CBD for their seizures, 89% saw a reduction in the frequency of seizures after the treatment.

That’s a significant decrease in frequency for the treated subjects. And it’s something most dog owners would want to know about if they’re precious pooch was afflicted with ongoing seizures. While the test subject size was limited in this study, it opens the doors for larger ventures into experiments that focus on the benefits surrounding CBD for dogs. The more research our furry friends can receive about their health, the better. They’re as much a part of our families as our blood relatives are. And they should have access to the same natural supplements that we do.

  • I love giving my dog big doses in the morning to help her relax! I find she loves the oil on her treats and even in her water. So much more relaxed now that I’ve introduced hemp into her life.
